Meet The Doctor

Maya Modzelewska, MD

Maya Modzelewska is the founder and medical director of Malama Pain, Spine and Joint Medicine. She is double board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation as well as Pain Medicine. Dr. Modzelewska focuses on restoring function through a collaborative, individualized treatment plan to help give patients non-surgical alternatives to relieve their pain. This often takes place through a comprehensive approach including physical therapy, non-opioid medications, and interventional treatments.

She is trained to treat a wide variety of pain conditions, spinal cord injuries, TBI, amputations, and spasticity. Her curiosity has led her to learn about regenerative medicine to heal and slow the progression of degeneration, restore function and give patients the opportunity to live active and meaningful lives. It is important in both her private and professional life to interact with kindness and empathy, taking the time to truly listen to her patients.

Dr. Modzelewska was raised on Oahu and attended Hawaii Pacific University before completing her medical studies at the Medical University of Lodz. She then completed her Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the University of Rochester and went on to complete a multidisciplinary Pain Medicine fellowship at the same institution. After her fellowship, Dr. Modzelewska worked in Oregon for 7 years before returning to Oahu to be closer to her ohana.

In her free time, Dr. Modzelewska enjoys reading, time with her family and two dogs, paddling, swimming, cycling, and hiking. Most of all, she is excited to bring her skills and compassion back to the community.
